“Home Is Where The Heart Is” was the title and theme of Vane Tempest Theatre Group’s 2019 concert performed at Enfield Road Independent Methodist Church and featured a selection of songs and sketches around the notion of how your home will always be the place for which you feel the deepest affection no matter where you are. Under the Direction of Keith Armitage and Musical Director Ben Wardropper they brought together an arrangement of musical numbers and sketches associated with either home or the heart which culminated in an outstanding and well performed concert delivered by a very talented group of people, whose vocals and harmonies to for me were outstanding. Vane Tempest is very proactive in their support to charitable causes and this year their chosen charity was “Caring for Craig” and it was a pleasure to meet Craig and his mum on the night I attended, a very worthy cause, well done to Vane Tempest it is so good to see the commitment you take into putting something back into the local community.
Starting the proceeding the cast delivered a beautiful number originally sang by Erasure in 1989 “Blue Savannah” a great number to open the concert and beautifully sung by the whole chorus, this was followed by the iconic number written by Burt Bacharach in 1963 for Dionne Warwick and became a hit for Cilla Black in 1964 “Anyone Who Had A Heart”, Rock and Roll took the next number with the cast singing the 1981 Shakin Stevens number “This Ole House”. Keith Amitage delivered one of Arthur Askey’s numbers from the classic vaudeville scene “All To Specification” great timing and certainly an audience pleaser. The first of the sketches “Across the Road” was comically acted by Suzy Wake, Nick Antcliff and Toni Harrison and Ian Dodd, very funny and well delivered.
Fantastic harmonies from the whole chorus delivering the 1971 John Denver number “Take Me Home, Country Road” which was followed by a beautiful number written for The Great Exhibition of The North named “Spirit Of The North”, first time that I have heard this number which was delightfully delivered with beautiful harmonies and for me the show stopper of the first act. Corey Clark delivered a confident rendition of “Santa Fe” excellent vocals from this young man and well delivered. The cast delivered a special rendition of “Your Cheating Heat” which was followed by a beautiful solo number from Laura Geary “Is This Home” from the musical “Beauty and The Beast” Laura has a beautiful voice and this number suited his vocal range beautifully, well sang and confidently delivered. Ben Southwick supported the cast with the musical number “Home” well sang Ben it’s nice to see you in front of the stage. The first act come to an end with the musical number made famous by Max Bygraves, “Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer” great number with audience participation.
The second act opened with the Jonny Loggins number “Heart to Heart”, followed by one of my favourite numbers by Phil Collins which was also used in the sound track to Tarzan “You’ll Be In My Heart” sang by John Reay and the chorus, lovely number and well delivered. The second of the sketches “Banter” again a well thought out sketch, which was well delivered by Gemma Parnaby and Nick Thompson with narrators John Reay and Ashleigh Hallimund. The cast sang another John Denver number “A Country Girl in Paris” which was followed by my second favourite number of the show sang by Suzy Wake “Homeward Bound” beautiful lyrics and superbly delivered. Nick Thompson sang the moving number “Home” by Michael Bublé, again excellent vocals from this talented young man. Keith Armitage recited the lament by Gerard Hoffnung “A Letter From A Bricklayer” great delivery and certainly sick leave granted, the cast delivered two delightful numbers “Our House” and the iconic number first sang in 1967 by The Beatles “She’s Leaving Home”, there was a quick temp change with Gemma Parnaby and the cast delivering the Shania Twain number “Honey I’m Home”, great song demonstrating the versatility of this group, followed by “Put A Little Love In Your Heart before bringing the concert to an end with “So Good To Be Back Home”.
This was a lovely evening of entertainment, a well-thought-out programme of songs and sketches delivered by a very enthusiastic group who put their hearts and souls into each number with beautiful harmonies, well done to the chorus, Carolyn Adgar, Susan Antcliff, Laura Collinson, Debbie Finkel, Julie Ann Marshall, Margaret Ridley, Kerrie Robinson, Helen Southwick, Lindsey Southwick and Linda Thompson.
