I was delighted to attend the first of my 2022-2023 season at a concert right on my doorstep with Vane Tempest Theatre Group’s (VTTG) concert entitled “Hopes, Dreams and Wishes”. The concert was put together with a collection of songs, poems and sketches which really give you a variety throughout.
Seaham Town Hall can be a difficult venue to stage anything in, but VTTG in their trademark uniform red polo shirts, a simple setting and a small raised platform performed a concert of varied lovely performances of a perfect duration which their audience truly enjoyed.
Ben Wardropper as musical director has a knack for creating beautiful arrangements to any of the songs chosen by VTTG and this concert was no exception. All of the selections were delivered by the entire ensemble in a controlled soft manner which were really beautiful. Ben’s jokes never fail to entertain and I admit I’m still chuckling at the coy car-park!
We began with a lovely introduction; “First Night Nerves” and an explanation from Helen Southwick about the chartable cause that VTTG were supporting is the “Clarke Lister Brain Haemorrhage Foundation” promoting and assisting research into the causes and treatment of this type of stroke, a lovely local charity whose work is incredible.
I really liked the varied format of the performances with jokes, sketches, ensemble numbers and solos interjecting which gave the audiences a real treat. The company were well rehearsed, well turned out, controlled and really pleasurable to listen to. We were also lucky enough to hear some lovely solo offerings from a number of the company which were really lovely. I’m afraid without names in the programme I’m a bit restricted as to whom I can identify, but I did love everything I heard. The arrangement for “I Dreamed a Dream” was particularly lovely, along with “Do You Hear the People sing” lead by Nick Thompson. “You will be found” from Dear Evan Hanson was absolutely gorgeous, led by the ever versatile Kat Thompson whose delivery was incredibly emotive.
The entire delivery was really lovely from everyone concerned, really well done. Ending of course, reminding the audience to “Always look on the Bright Side of Life and encouraging a good old sing along. A lovely cheerful ending encouraging us all to “Hope, to Dream and to Wish”
Thank you Vane Tempest. A really lovely evening.
